Churnkey Alternatives: Options for Small SaaS on Stripe
Churnkey is a well known retention tool for subscription businesses. If you are searching for alternatives, it is usually for one of two reasons. Either you only need the failed payment part and not the rest, or the price feels high for your current size.
Before we start, full disclosure: we run a competing service, Renewvane. We have tried to keep this fair. Facts come from linked sources. Our views are marked as opinion. Prices are as of October 2026; check each company's site for current pricing.
What we know about Churnkey
The Fungies comparison of dunning tools lists Churnkey from $300 a month (as of October 2026, check their site).
Churnkey has also published research that many people in this space cite. Its analysis of 5.4 million failed payments put 22% of subscription cancellations down to failed payments, as reported by Gymdesk. That is vendor research, so treat it as a useful signal rather than a promise about your business. Still, it is a real contribution, and we think it is fair to credit them for it.
Our opinion: Churnkey is aimed at teams that want a broad retention toolkit. If you only need failed payment recovery, you may be paying for more than you use. If you need the broader toolkit, it may be worth it. Check their site to see what is included in each plan.
Separate the two problems
Churn usually comes in two kinds:
- Voluntary churn: a customer decides to cancel.
- Involuntary churn: a customer's payment fails and they leave without ever deciding to.
Tools that focus on cancellation flows deal mostly with the first. Recovery tools deal with the second. Know which one you are trying to fix before you compare prices. This article focuses on the second, because that is what we do.
Start with Stripe's built in tools
Stripe offers built in retries and reminder emails for failed subscription payments. Our honest view: turn these on first. They are included with Stripe Billing, and they recover a real share of temporary declines.
Then measure what is left. Count failed invoices in the last 90 days that were never paid. That leftover is what any recovery tool, including ours, is competing to bring back.
Alternatives by pricing model
Flat monthly tools
- Churn Buster: from $249 a month in the Fungies comparison (as of October 2026, check their site). It is a long running name focused on failed payment recovery.
- Baremetrics Recover: $169 a month in the same comparison (as of October 2026, check their site). It may suit teams already using Baremetrics for subscription analytics.
- Renewvane (us): $49 a month after a free Leak Check and, if your numbers show the plan would likely pay for itself (about $2,500 a month of failed payments across 20 or more failed payments), a 30 day free trial. Cancel anytime. Every month you get a proof report that compares recovery on invoices we emailed with a random holdout group that got no emails from us, after a safety margin for chance, and counts only payments made through our links.
Our opinion: flat tools are predictable and can be good value when your monthly leak is large.
Success fee tools
- Gravy and FlyCode: listed as success based options in the Fungies comparison. Check their current terms, especially what they count as a recovery. Our opinion: success fees suit teams that are unsure how big the leak is, or whose leak goes up and down month to month. Ask exactly what they count as a recovery.
Newer indie tools
The Fungies comparison also names smaller newcomers, including Retryfix and WorkAid Dunning. We have not tested them and have no data to share. Compare them on the checklist below.
Do it yourself
A developer can build a basic recovery flow with Stripe webhooks and an email service. A founder can get a decent email template from ChatGPT in a minute. Our opinion: the words are the easy part. The work is in watching Stripe events at all hours, timing emails, handling each failure type differently, stopping emails when a payment clears, reading replies and reporting results.
A short checklist for comparing any option
- Does it take credit for payments Stripe would have recovered anyway? Success fee customers in nearby markets complain about paying on wins they would have had regardless, as Chargeflow reviews on the Shopify App Store show, and any tool's dashboard can overstate its effect the same way. Our monthly proof report only credits us with recovery above a randomized holdout group's rate, after a safety margin for chance, so Stripe's own retries are already subtracted. Payments from Stripe's automatic retries on the old card never count.
- Is the price clear, and can you cancel anytime?
- What Stripe access does it need? Prefer restricted keys or an official connection with the least access possible.
- Does it treat "authentication required" separately? These need the customer to confirm with their bank, so a retry will not help. A founder on Indie Hackers, who sells a competing tool, highlighted this.
- Can the emails sound like you? The same founder reported moving from 35% to 65% recovery after switching to plain text emails with a one click update link. One person's experience, but useful.
- Are the emails kept free of promotions? The Fungies comparison notes this matters for how email rules apply.
- Do you get a clear recovered dollars report?
- What happens to your data when you leave?
When Churnkey may still be right for you
In fairness, we think Churnkey could be the better choice if:
- You want help with voluntary cancellations as well as failed payments, in one tool.
- Your failed and at risk revenue is large enough that a flat monthly fee is easy to justify.
- You value the research and experience behind an established vendor.
When Renewvane may fit better
Our opinion:
- You only need failed payment recovery.
- You are a small SaaS on Stripe and want a low flat price, $49 a month, with a free audit first.
- You want plain text emails in your own tone, a separate "authentication required" path and a weekly recovered dollars email.
- You want a monthly holdout proof report, so you can see what the emails added and cancel if it is not worth it.
We are a new service. We will not show you invented testimonials or recovery rates we cannot back up. What we can do is show you your own numbers before you pay anything.
The simplest next step
- Turn on Stripe's retries and reminders.
- Measure your leftover failed revenue for the last 90 days.
- Decide whether you need a cancellation tool, a recovery tool or both.
- Compare options using the checklist above.
Get your number for free: the free Leak Check takes a few totals from your own Stripe Dashboard and shows how much revenue failed in the last 90 days and how much never came back. It runs in your browser: no Stripe key, no access to your account, and your numbers are never sent to us. No charge, no card, and no obligation to sign up.
See your own number first. The free Leak Check takes a few totals from your own Stripe Dashboard and shows what is still lost after Stripe's retries. It runs in your browser with no Stripe access, and your numbers are never sent to us. If it is enough for our $49 a month plan to likely pay for itself (about $2,500 a month of failed payments across 20 or more failed payments), the plan will start with a 30 day free trial once it opens. The paid service is not open yet.
